Description

This is one of two German Cultural Studies modules which are required study for German Intermediate (post-Beginner) students taking 40 credits of German at Level Two, prior to residence abroad. It provides intensive study of the political system, governmental and social institutions and media landscape of Germany since 1945, with particular emphasis on the contemporary Berlin Republic. Diverse reading and visual material in both German and English will be used in support of the course: a modern German history textbook in English; short governmental information booklets produced by the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung; newspaper articles; film extracts; television news bulletins and documentary material. The course is intended to develop students¿ reading capabilities strongly while giving them a detailed understanding of the public world of post-War and contemporary Germany.
